In conjunction with our Character Education Program, the Appletree School offers an Intergenerational Program.
We partner with nearby Sunrise Assisted Living Communities to give our students opportunities to practice their social skills, share their joy of learning and celebrate seasonal activities with senior residents.
The children shine during these visits. They practice their manners learned in the classroom to greet and interact with residents. Throughout the year, our students also enjoy celebrating holiday traditions with their special friends. For example, in October students wear Halloween costumes, share treats and perform favorite songs learned in class.
The intergenerational Program offers many enriching opportunities for children and seniors to share lives and experiences.
As our students connect with seniors, they bring happiness and positive energy into the residents’ daily lives. It is a mutually beneficial relationship, with the seniors feeling reinvigorated by the innocence and joy of the visiting children, while our students are learning respect, patience and helpfulness.
Academy classes establish a pen pal connection with a specific friend. Through the year, students continue to build that relationship, enhancing their writing skills through regular written communication.
Some other activities we enjoy together among our age groups include:
- Storytelling
- Interviewing
- Sharing projects
- Creating art together
- Reading books together
